Who can be referred?

We have a national patient intake for detained NHS patients, including those under Ministry of Justice restrictions and non forensic patients who require medium and low secure environments and are able to treat patients requiring short-term or lifetime care.
We receive referrals for:

  • Remand/sentenced patients with a history of offending
  • Multiple diagnosis
  • Patients detained under the Mental Health Act (1983)
  • Mental illness
  • Mental illness combined with physical illness
  • Personality disorders and borderline personality disorders
  • Asperger's Syndrome
  • Forensic addictions
  • Psychoses
  • Learning disabilities
  • Substance misuse
  • Elderly/frail patients with forensic history
  • Long term intensive, highly flexible treatment for adults with enduring mental health needs, via our Priory Grange hospitals

Who can refer?

The Priory Group accept referrals from a wide variety of public sector organisations throughout the UK. These include high secure hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, prisons, courts, medium secure units (MSUs), social services and the police.

More specifically we accept referrals from Broadmoor, Rampton, Ashworth, SHA forensic lead commissioners, NHS specialist commissioners, social workers, and other specialist psychiatric services. We have long-term agreements with a range of PCTs and local authorities and also provide placements on a spot-purchase basis.

We only accept referrals from public sector organisations. We welcome self funding patients but they would need to be referred to one of our acute hospitals. We recommend that you contact us directly on 0845 2 PRIORY (0845 2 774 679) to discuss this further.

Assessment and admission

Free assessments can be carried out by a senior clinician usually within 24 hours and often on the same day. Same day admission can be facilitated and we can, if necessary, assist with transferring the patient.

All our hospitals have specific admission criteria relevant to the service and support that they offer.  See the hospital listings below for more detail.

Patients and their carers are at the forefront of all that we plan and do, and we ensure that admission to our hospitals is as comfortable and informative as possible.

How to refer

A referral can be made to the appropriate hospital's admissions office by telephone, email via our on-line referral form, fax or in writing. The admissions office then passes the patient's details on to the appropriate consultant psychiatrist.

Emergency referrals

We are able to accept 24/7 referrals. Urgent or out of hours appointments and admissions can be arranged immediately by telephoning the appropriate hospital.
