Options after Leaving School

Transition planning

Education for young people with special educational needs does not have to stop at 16. Options are available to move on to further education or work-based training depending on the child's individual interests and talents.

The annual review in Year 9 is important in preparing for the move into further education and will consider your child's targets, statement and preparation of a Transition Plan for your child to move into adulthood. At this stage it is likely that a Connexions Personal Advisor will become involved with the Transition Plan and carry out another assessment to allow your child to carry on with further education or training. Connexions will work with further education and training providers to ensure that your child gets the right help and support they need. Universities and colleges offer higher education for students from the age of 18 and are open to all young people who have the ability to benefit from it.
