As a parent you have the right to say which special school you want your child to go to and the local authority (LA) must agree with your preference as long as the school you choose is suitable for your child's age, ability, skills and special educational needs (SEN), that your child's presence will not damage the education of other children already at the school and placing your child in the school will be an efficient use of the local authorities resources.

Parental involvement

All Priory Schools aim to support parents whilst their child is in our education and care. Most schools have a dedicated Family Support Co-ordinator and a full parent support programme to give parents the opportunity to share their concerns, experiences and information. Calendar events vary according to the individual school but may include parent training sessions, information workshops, social gatherings and performances to celebrate student achievement.

Parent Partnership Services

Parent partnership services are an important source of help, support and advice for parents of children who have special educational needs. They can help to provide accurate and impartial information on the full range of options available to parents and help parents to make informed decisions about their child's education. As a neutral service they won't 'take sides' in any disagreement or resolution process. Parent partnership services can also provide an independent parental supporter if required. National and local voluntary organisations

There are a number of local and national voluntary organisations in the UK that can help children with disabilities and learning difficulties and their parents and families. It is important that you have the right support, help and guidance when your child is being diagnosed with special educational needs and these organisations can provide a strong network of support for you, your child and your family. Some organisations offer general advice whilst others focus on specific areas that you may be interested in.
