Priory expands services at Southampton hospital
8/3/10
The Priory Group has expanded its care provision in Southampton with the opening of the Priory Grange Perryhayes Unit, catering for men over the age of 18 with severe and enduring mental health problems.
The care and treatment programmes are based on the principles of rehabilitation and recovery to enable or re-enable people who are 'stuck in care' to live in the community independently or within supported living arrangements.
People who have been cared for in institutional mental health care settings will benefit from this service; they may want to move from long-term residential care or be ready to progress from long-term hospital care, including secure settings.
The service is able to provide for a wheelchair user, although it is not geared to manage people with a high predominance of physical health needs.
The Perryhayes Unit is within the Priory Hospital Southampton and takes its name from a tranquil copse a short distance from the hospital.
The facilities at the Unit include nine en-suite bedrooms, a social area, access to laundry and kitchen facilities to help promote independence, large accessible grounds with an allotment and a controlled access system.
Flexible care programmes to meet individual patient needs will be delivered by a multi-disciplinary team under the guidance of consultant psychiatrists Dr Schenk and Dr Bray.
Matthew Franzidis, chief operating officer at the Priory Group said: "Priory's experience and expertise in caring for and treating patients with a wide range of mental health problems will be invaluable in the success of the Perryhayes Unit.
"It will bring specialist care to people in Southampton and the surrounding areas. The hospital management will work closely with patients, families, purchasers and clinicians to ensure that patient quality of life is the paramount concern.
"The new service will maintain the highest standards of care in a safe, positive environment."
