A diverse panel of experts debate the nature of mental illness:
- Existence of mental illness: exploring Szasz and the anti-psychiatry movement
- Diagnosis and treatment vs. Freedom and responsibility
- Causal connections: neuroscience and mental illness - is the mind separate from the brain?
- Philosophical issues surrounding the classification of mental diseases
- Morality and autonomy: To what extent can one have mental control over mental illness? Should a mentally ill person be blamed for their actions?

Before the event there will be a screening of "Better Days", the Southampton Film Week short film made by young people at Fairbridge, the inner city youth project.
"The Myth of Mental Illness?" is part of The Art of Medicine Exhibition Project. Included in the ticket price is an invitation after the event to drinks and a viewing of The Art of Medicine Exhibition, across the road at The Art House Gallery.
This public debate is part of an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded research network on the The Concepts of Health, Illness and Disease. The project is managed by Dr Havi Carel (University of West England) and Dr Rachel Cooper (Lancaster).
