Middlesbrough star Tony McMahon officially opened the Priory School Hurworth House in Hurworth near Darlington, County Durham

The Priory Group has invested around £1 million in refurbishing the former independent boys’ school to provide day school facilities for up to 35 young people with special educational needs. Around 20 jobs will be created for the local economy.

Priory Education Services, part of the Priory Group, operates the school. The company is a leading independent provider of education and care for young people with special needs.

It has 23 schools and seven colleges in various locations nationwide. Each school has its own individual qualities that are unique to the children and young people within it in order to offer a complete integration of education, care and therapy.

Helen Sharpe, managing director of Priory Education Services said: “Hurworth House School will offer an alternative to residential education, allowing students to access high quality specialist education and to develop independence and social skills whilst living in their home environment.

“We hope that our students will become part of a positive and supportive local community.

“Priory Education Services has an excellent reputation for delivering the highest levels of education and care to young people with differing needs. The group includes specialist schools, further education colleges and children’s homes together with an emergency placement unit, adult care homes and fostering services.
